A woman’s work is never done. Whether it’s making a career straight out of college, building a home, taking care of babies, or being a good daughter, friend, wife and mother. Invariably, skincare becomes the last priority for most women, but it’s important to note that great skin in your 40s is always the result of adequate care and attention in your 20s.
In your 20s
Despite occasional acne, your skin is still healthy. Haywire hormones and sun exposure are the biggest concerns at this time, and most skin issues in your 20s are consequences of poor lifestyle choices: hectic partying, alcohol, smoking and irregular sleep patterns.
Your daily routine:
Cleansing: Cleanse your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser. Don’t use scrubs more than once a week.
Moisturizing: Use a light formula for the day and an oil-free moisturizer at bedtime.
Sun protection: Never venture out without applying sunscreen. You will thank yourself later for using sunscreen now. When you and your flawless skin meet friends with an uneven skin tone or pigmented patches at your 25th school reunion, you’ll definitely thank us for this tip.
The cures for your concerns:
Acne: For most people in their 20s, acne is the commonest skin complaint. For mild breakouts, use a spot treatment cream containing Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide or organic alternatives like Tea Tree or Neem. Don’t pick at your skin as this can cause long-lasting scars. For persistent, serious acne, consult a dermatologist.
Pigmentation: Use a cream containing Retinol, and Vitamins C and E to reduce patchy skin. Chemical peels can tackle pigmentation and make skin more radiant. Make sure you protect your skin from sunlight. At night, after cleansing your face, apply a Vitamin C serum. And NEVER go to bed with your makeup on.
Anti-aging: In your 20s, maintaining skin health is the best anti-aging strategy. Go for regular cleanups to remove blackheads and whiteheads especially on the nose. You can also try the Oxygen Jet Peel that uses a jet of pure oxygen on the face to cleanse impurities.

In your 30s
The 30s are about coming of age, not just in your mind, but also on your skin. You may notice more hyperpigmentation, fine lines, sun spots, and dark under-eye circles. A few even suffer adult acne, caused by hormonal imbalances and stress.
Your daily routine:
Cleansing: Be gentle with your skin. Cleanse your face twice a day but avoid the antibacterial washes you swore by in your teens.
Moisturizing: Switch to antioxidant-rich moisturizers or serums. Look for ingredients such as Soy, Coffee Berry and Vitamin C. They work to guard against sun damage and undo existing photodamage. Hyaluronic Acid is also a good choice because it fades fine lines and suits most skin types. If you have dry skin, use oil-based moisturizers to hydrate your skin. It’s very important to moisturize your hands and neck as well because they are the earliest to show signs of ageing.
Sun protection: Wear a broad spectrum UVA & UVB protective sunscreen every day and reapply every two hours.
The cures for your concerns:
Fine lines: Toward the end of your 30s, fine lines begin to get more pronounced and the shape of your face begins to change because of dislocation of the facial fat pad under your skin. For this, try Vitamin Mesoglow therapy, a formulation of vitamins, amino acids and medication that rejuvenates, tightens and brightens the skin.
Other options are peels, skin boosters including Hyaluronic Acid, Restylane Vital and Mesolis, or PRP treatment (better known as the Vampire Facial), which stimulates collagen.

In your 40s
Around your mid-40s, laugh lines, crow’s feet and creases on the forehead begin to make an appearance. Pigmentation also tends to get worse. In women, dipping estrogen levels and menopause-related hormonal imbalances make the skin drier and less elastic. This begins to show up around the eyes, neck and décolleté.
Your daily routine:
Cleansing: Use a hydrating cleanser twice a day, preferably one that is non-foaming.
Moisturizing: Choose thicker, richer moisturizers (preferably with SPF) to add hydration and collagen-building ingredients into skin. Get religious about using night creams and eye creams if you haven’t done so already. If the skin on your neck and hands has begun to show loss of elasticity, try using an anti-aging product that includes Peptides, Retinols and Ceramides to smooth and plump skin.
Sun protection: Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.
The cures for your concerns:
Dry skin: You’ll need to moisturize a few times more during the day and probably use a thick cream-based moisturizer once a day. Avoid products that are likely to irritate your skin or cause further dryness, such as topical treatments for acne and chemical exfoliators.
Pigmentation: Use a Vitamin C serum as your daytime moisturizer and again at night, along with a skin-brightening cream for pigment reduction.
Wrinkles: Botox can erase frown lines and crow’s feet, while temporary fillers made of Hyaluronic Acid stimulate collagen production and work on jowls, sunken cheeks and eyes. Dermalifts, a non-invasive radiofrequency-based tightening treatment will work on sagging skin, sculpting and renewing.

In your 50s and beyond
If there’s one skin concern that defines this decade, it’s sagging. Although dry skin, wrinkles, and hyper-pigmentation too may be niggling problems, especially if you’ve not been careful about sun protection, it’s the loss of skin elasticity that’s most distressing. This is because of reduced levels of Collagen and Elastin that make skin thinner and looser. Hanging jowls, ‘turkey’ neck bands, smile lines and furrows on the forehead are common problems. This is the time to focus on tightening and firming up your skin. Dry skin is also a common concern.
Your daily routine:
Cleansing: Cleanse twice daily with a super hydrating face wash.
Moisturizing: You need to moisturize more frequently, using a rich moisturizer containing Shea Butter, Squalene and Hyaluronic Acid, antioxidants and SPF. Your night cream should contain Phytoestrogens to help with hormonal aging.
The cures for your concerns:
Wrinkles: Botox injections and laser treatments are good options to get rid of wrinkles and other skin flaws. Non-surgical skin tightening treatments using radiofrequency and infrared light are good choices.
Skin fatigue: PRP treatments reintroduce growth factors back into skin to stimulate Collagen and Elastin.
